Rain and Restoration

Last week's rain was just what the farm needed—and me as well.

Almost overnight, everything seemed to come alive again. The dahlias and feverfew put on a burst of growth, decorative grasses sent up new stems, and tiny calendula, sunflower, and zinnia seedlings pushed through the soil. The rain also woke up the weeds, and they're putting up quite a fight, but little by little we're gaining ground.

Green is the color I see most around the farm right now.

The brightest splash of color this week comes from a dahlia I planted a few years ago. How it survived last winter, I still don't know, but it came through the late freezes and decided not to wait for the others. While this year's dahlias are still growing, it's been a cheerful reminder that every season has a few surprises.

Sometimes all it takes is one good rain to remind me how much can change in a week.
